Chain with Crown of Roses charm. Gold and diamond
Inspired by the Crown of Roses from the image of Our Lady of Fátima of the Chapel of the Apparitions, manufactured by the Leitão house in 1942.
This gold chain features a charm with a rose, also in gold, where a diamond dewdrop shines in its centre.
Crown of Roses
In 1942, the Portuguese people entrusted the Leitão house with many hundreds of pieces of jewellery to make a queen’s crown for Our Lady. The generosity of the donations was such that a second crown was made, in addition to the Precious Crown. This crown, also a queen’s crown, is made of gilded silver and decorated with chiselled roses.
The crown is on the image of the chapel every day of the year, except for major holidays, when the Precious Crown is used instead. The theme of roses, chiselled on the crown, also hearkens back to the memory of Elizabeth of Aragon (wife of king Dom Dinis, queen of Portugal and later Queen St. Elizabeth) and the miracle of the roses.
Elizabeth of Aragon, wife of king Dom Dinis and queen of Portugal in the late 14th century, was canonized Queen St. Elizabeth.
These were difficult times in the Kingdom of Portugal, when the queen would leave the palace to hand out bread to the poor.
When the king confronted her on one of these outings, asking her what she was carrying, she answered: “Roses, my lord”. She unfolded her dress, and the hidden bread appeared as roses.
